You all know the classic Mountain Dew. The one with the green bottle. It is "citrus" flavoured. Lime, one would presume based on the colour. At least I can tell what it is. Things get a bit muddy later down the line. It's okay. I would choose it over most other sodas. I have not had much of it, but I would currently rate it a 4.6/10.
I'm trying to be "healthier" or something so when I found the enticing nuclear green bottle that is Mountain Dew Zero, I knew I had to try it. Some people cut themselves, but my self harm of choice is staying up into the early hours of morning browsing Reddit on my bathroom floor. All this is to say I'm very dependant on caffeine to get through the day.
On one particularly tired day when I felt like the floor was reaching up to swallow me whole, I decided I needed a nice caffeinated beverage to wake me up. During my research to find the most caffeinated soda, I found out this is the Mountain Dew with the most caffeine in it (other than Kickstart, which is literally an energy drink). Needless to say, I was enticed by this information, but was forced to drink a Blue Voltage instead, as my school doesn't carry Mountain Dew Zero. Nevertheless, it did the job.
Anyways, I decided to try it today, and if it weren't for the high caffeine content, I would not be buying it again. It tastes aggressively of aspartame, which always makes for an unpleasant drinking experience. You can taste the citrus more, but it isn't worth it. It tastes exactly like Fresca, which is an "I will drink this because it's the only thing in my grandmother's fridge" drink, and not an "I will go out and buy this" kind of drink. The taste starts out pretty shocking, but you get used to it as time goes on.
Generally, the only pros are that it's highly caffeinated and the fact the bottle looks cooler than the regular one. It looks like I'm drinking mutagen. Anyways, there are better alternatives than this. If you want soda for soda but don't want the sugar, you're better off just drinking a Pepsi Zero instead. If you're looking for energy, it's easier just to make like that one guy I knew in the fourth grade, and eat coffee grinds.
All in all, a 3.3/10
I have not bought Code Red yet. Mainly because it looks gross. I will try it soon and add my opinion.
Update: I did buy it and try it but I kind of forgot to rate it so I have to buy it again.
I tried Baja Blast for the first time today. It was pretty good. I like the colour and the logo. It is a summer drink for sure, and even though it is fall, I can still enjoy it. It tastes like tropical sugar to me, but apparently it is tropical lime. 7/10.
Voltage (or Blue Voltage as I call it) is my current go-to flavour of Mountain Dew. Maybe I would switch things up more but my school's vending maching only has Voltage, Code Red and Spark. And I don't want to go to the convenience store during lunch because that's where all the trashy kids hang out. I had no idea what Blue Voltage was supposed to taste like until I looked it up today. Apparently it is Raspberry Citrus. I couldn't have told you that with a gun to my head. I don't know why Mountain Dew is always colouring their flavours weird. Oh well. I like my Blue Juice. I probably wouldn't drink it if it was pink. I guess I can see it now that I know.
Anyways, this stuff is good enough I sacrifice having a real meal for lunch to buy it. Lunch at my highschool is six bucks. Mountain Dew is three. Thankfully, a microwaveable cup of KD is only two bucks. That means I can buy a Mountain Dew, KD and have one dollar extra. Three days of that and I can buy another Mountain Dew. Sometimes I mix a little Blue Voltage into my KD. It's not bad. Next time I'll try cooking it in Mountain Dew instead of water.
All of this is just a long way to say that I give Blue Voltage an 8.7/10.
I see this stuff is limited time so I will be sure to try it soon.
From what I can tell there is a different mystery VooDew flavour every year. I have only tried this one. It is currently a mystery. The flavour is in partnership with a candy brand, so that makes my life a lot easier. It had a milder taste, so my current prediction is Jolly Rancher or Skittles. I will have to run more tests. Anyhow, as I said it was surprisingly mild. Usually "Mystery" flavours are just the runoff of other candies without dye. I'm not a huge fan of it being white, if I'm being honest. It makes sense, I just don't like that I could mix cornstarch with water and achieve a similar look. What do you even use to dye soda white? I give it a 6.5/10 Edit: Looks like I was wrong about the flavour.
Pitch Black was a flavour that I found last year at Halloween. I was intrigued by it's colour and drank it quite a few times even though I wasn't a full-fledged Dew Fan yet. It is actually dark purple and not black. I'm not complaining. "Black" dye is just really concentrated blue. Quite frankly I think that much food colouring would kill me. I quite like Pitch Black and am disappointed it did not return this year to my knowledge. It has a pleasant citrus taste, as I'm seeing most Mountain Dew does. Pitch Black gets a 9.1/10. Please bring it back.
